The Subtle Art of Making Spaces Feel Effortless with Zoya Khan

Zoya Khan is an Interior Designer at U+A, bringing a strong architectural foundation and over four years of experience in residential & Commercial design across the UAE. Her work is shaped by a thoughtful balance between functionality and atmosphere, with a focus on creating spaces that respond intuitively to everyday living. With a background spanning architecture and interior design, Zoya approaches each project with a sensitivity to spatial flow, materiality, and user experience, translating client needs into refined, livable environments.

“Effortless” spaces often hide a lot of complexity. What’s something you intentionally overthink so the result feels natural?

I pay a lot of attention to the circulation, proportions, and layering of materials in a subtle way. A space can look simple, but achieving that balance takes a lot of refinement. I carefully think about how finishes interact with lighting, how colours flow between spaces, and how different elements complement each other without competing. When it’s done right, the space feels calm, cohesive, and naturally put together rather than overly designed.

How do you distinguish between what a client says they want and how they live?

The brief is only the starting point. I pay close attention to their daily routines and the way they naturally live within a space. Sometimes clients ask for features based on inspiration they’ve seen, but the way they use a space tells a different story. Understanding how they entertain, unwind, and work helps shape a design that feels personal and functional rather than purely aesthetic.

What is one design decision that can quietly define the entire atmosphere of a home if done right?

Lighting has the ability to completely shape the mood of a home. It's one of the most important elements in a space because it influences how colors, textures, and materials are experienced.  Beyond decorative fixtures, it’s the layering of light - natural light, ambient lighting, subtle accents, and concealed details that creates warmth and depth. When lighting is considered thoughtfully from the beginning, it makes a space feel balanced, comfortable, and emotionally connected.

How do you handle situations where a design looks visually strong but doesn’t feel right?

A space can look beautiful visually, but still feel disconnected when the balance between function, scale or emotion is missing. In those moments, I step back and reassess how the space is experienced rather than how it photographs. Often, simplifying certain elements, adjusting proportions, or refining the material palette helps bring back a sense of comfort and authenticity.

What role do transitions like corridors or in-between spaces play in creating a seamless living experience?

Transitions are often underestimated- Corridors, entrances, and in-between spaces create moments of pause and rhythm between functions. When designed thoughtfully through lighting, material continuity, proportions, and visual connections, they make the home feel cohesive rather than segmented. These spaces quietly influence the overall flow and atmosphere of a project.

How do you see residential interior design evolving, and what personal direction or trend are you naturally drawn to in your own work?

I think residential interior design is evolving towards spaces that feel calmer, more refined, and deeply connected to the way people live. There’s a growing appreciation for simplicity, comfort, and timelessness over overly decorative interiors. Personally, I’m naturally drawn to a minimal contemporary direction with warm tones, soft textures, and clean detailing — spaces that feel elegant and effortless while still being inviting and lived in.
