Key Responsibilities
Design and Analysis:
Develop and optimize tunnel ventilation systems, ensuring compliance with HVAC and FLS standards.
Perform CFD analysis for smoke control, air distribution, and pollutant dispersion within tunnel environments.
Ensure designs adhere to regulatory requirements and international safety standards.
Project Management:
Collaborate with project teams and stakeholders to design and implement ventilation and safety systems for various tunnel types (road, rail, utility).
Conduct project-specific risk assessments and hazard analysis to validate ventilation designs.
Prepare technical documentation and reports, including ventilation strategies, compliance assessments, and safety analyses.
Technical Expertise:
Apply best practices in tunnel ventilation, including longitudinal, transverse, and semi-transverse systems.
Use CFD software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or similar) to simulate and analyze airflow and thermal conditions under various operational scenarios.
Assess environmental impacts of ventilation systems, focusing on energy efficiency and emissions control.
Field and Site Support:
Participate in on-site inspections and field tests to validate CFD model results and assess ventilation performance.
Work closely with construction teams during implementation phases to ensure design compliance and address engineering challenges.
Coordination and Collaboration:
Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams, including civil, structural, and electrical engineers, to integrate ventilation systems within overall tunnel design.
Engage with fire safety experts and local regulatory bodies for design approvals and compliance reviews.
Reporting and Documentation:
Develop detailed technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
Document lessons learned and contributed to knowledge sharing and technical improvements for future projects.
Qualifications and Skills
Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, HVAC, or a related field. Master’s degree or specialization in tunnel ventilation is a plus.
Experience: 8-10 years in HVAC and FLS engineering, with a focus on tunnel ventilation and safety systems.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in CFD software and analysis methods relevant to HVAC and ventilation.
Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., NFPA 502, ASHRAE guidelines, PIARC, and EU guidelines for tunnel ventilation).
Experience with KSA regulations and regional projects is highly preferred.
Soft Skills:
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Effective communication and teamwork abilities, especially in multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural settings.

ANSYS Fluent – For advanced airflow, smoke dispersion, and thermal analysis.
OpenFOAM – Open-source software for custom CFD modeling and simulation.
STAR-CCM+ – For comprehensive simulation of ventilation and fire scenarios.

SES (Subway Environment Simulation) – For designing and analyzing ventilation in subways and tunnels.
IDAS (Integrated Design and Analysis Software) – Used for safety analysis in tunnel environments.
Ventsim/Ventilation Simulation Software – Focused on airflow simulation in underground environments.
General HVAC and Mechanical Design Software:
Revit MEP – For designing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in 3D.
AutoCAD – For drafting ventilation layouts and mechanical schematics.
DIALux (optional) – For assessing lighting impact in tunnels, if relevant.
Fire and Life Safety Analysis:
FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) – For modeling fire growth, smoke movement, and evacuation scenarios.
PyroSim – GUI-based tool for FDS to simulate fire and evacuation in tunnels.
Project Management and Collaboration Tools:
Navisworks – For clash detection and multi-disciplinary design coordination.
Primavera P6 or MS Project – For project scheduling and resource planning.
Regulatory and Energy Simulation Tools:
ASHRAE Energy Modeling Software (e.g., Trane TRACE 700, IES VE) – For energy efficiency analysis of ventilation systems.
