The Traffic Engineer supports multidisciplinary infrastructure projects in Markham, ON, Canada. This role combines transportation planning and traffic engineering responsibilities within a consulting environment, contributing to the delivery of municipal and regional transportation initiatives.
The position involves leading and executing a broad range of studies, including transportation master plans, municipal class environmental assessments, traffic operations and safety reviews, and transportation impact assessments. Work spans project phases from technical analysis and modelling through reporting, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory submissions. The role operates within a collaborative environment involving engineers, planners, and public-sector stakeholders.
The ideal candidate brings 7–15 years of experience in transportation engineering and planning, with expertise in traffic modelling, project coordination, and mentorship of junior staff, as well as strong familiarity with Ontario municipal and provincial guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Undertakes transportation planning and traffic engineering studies including:
- multi-modal transportation studies
- transportation master plans (TMP)
- municipal class environmental assessments (EA) studies
- active transportation master plan (ATMP) studies/projects
- transportation demand management (TDM) studies
- transit studies
- parking studies
- traffic operations and safety studies
- transportation impact studies (TIS)
- Actively participates in the preparation of proposals and writing reports including EAs, TMPs, AT, TIS, parking studies, etc.
- Completing traffic modelling and analysis with applicable design software (Synchro, VISSIM, VISUM, Aimsun, etc.).
- Providing mentorship, guidance, quality control, support and oversight of junior team members to complete various traffic engineering and transportation planning tasks.
- Attends and participates at client, stakeholders, and public meetings.
- Conduct and lead field studies (site visits, inventories, traffic, and parking counts, etc).
- Establishes and maintains good working relationships and communication with clients, department managers, internal and external leads.
Required
- University degree in Civil Engineering or Transportation Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
- 7–15 years of experience in transportation engineering and transportation planning within a consulting environment.
- Proven experience delivering transportation studies such as TMP, EA, TIS, traffic operations, and parking studies.
- Proficiency in traffic modelling and analysis software including Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM, VISUM, Aimsun, HCS, or equivalent tools.
- Experience using GIS tools (ArcGIS) and design software such as AutoCAD and AutoTURN.
- Strong knowledge of municipal and provincial transportation guidelines, review processes, and design standards in Ontario.
- Demonstrated experience in project coordination, technical reporting, and stakeholder communication.
Assets
- Experience with regional or corridor-level transportation planning projects.
- Familiarity with transit network planning and active transportation infrastructure design.
- Experience supporting or leading public consultation processes and stakeholder engagement initiatives.
- Demonstrated involvement in proposal development and business development strategy.
- Advanced proficiency in transportation modelling platforms (e.g., EMME, Vistro).
