About the role and project.

The Midland Metro Alliance is expanding the West Midlands tram network to improve connectivity, support economic growth, and provide more sustainable transport options. Key projects include the Birmingham Eastside and Westside extensions, and the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension.

EGIS leads the Designer JV of the Alliance and is working in close collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders to deliver a groundbreaking mass transit system that catalyses sustainable growth and regeneration in the West Midlands. Our scope includes Concept, Preliminary and Detailed Design, Systems and sub-systems Integration, Engineering construction support, Safety Verification and Testing and Commissioning.

We are looking to hire an experienced Senior Urban Designer to join this project. You will be based in our London Office with travel to our Birmingham Office 1 to 2 times per week.


About the Role

We are seeking a suitably qualified Senior Urban designer with a diverse track record to join the UK Urban Design team.

Professional Experience: Combination of the following:

  • UK or international Light Rail Masterplanning and design standards
  • Transport  Masterplanning,
  • Regional and Strategic Spatial Planning,
  • Urban Design Framework, criteria and principles, Urban Regeneration Strategies
  • Environmental  principles understanding

Skills

  • An interest in the regeneration of our town centres and urban areas.
  • An ability to bring innovative, creative, engaging, and comprehensive placemaking ideas to masterplanning and design.
  • A good understanding of UK  Urban design strategies, inclusive design, current trends, and issues in urban design.
  • Experience working with a wide range of technical sub-consultants, including architects and landscape and movement experts.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate.

  • A good understanding of planning policy and urban design / architectural building typology technical criteria for both greenfield and brownfield projects.
  • A portfolio of work with a variety of projects at a range of scales.
  • Experience in urban design analysis, combining holistic thinking around place, community and environment.
  • Graphics design capability to convey a range of graphics, from process to design outputs.
  • Sound technical knowledge of transport, planning, architecture, landscape and public realm.
  • Multidisciplinary working experience and strong collaborative approach.
  • Stakeholder engagement skills in designing and delivering consultations, co-design workshops, surveys, and communication
  • Project management and good understanding of management processes, including project reviews, progress reports, early warnings etc.
  • Client-facing experience and supporting the senior team members in work-winning.
  • Ability to work independently, managing your own time and workload to meet deadlines.
  • Producing high-quality work within tight timescales and budgets.
  • Excellent hand drawing and presentation skills.
  • Good understanding and ability to integrate sustainability agenda, socioeconomics and social value.

What do we need from you

  • Master's in either : Sustainable urban design, urban regeneration, or urban development, and Bachelor's in Architecture or a Design-related discipline. RTPI accreditation.

Software skills:

  • Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), AutoCAD, 3d modelling in Revit / SketchUp up, and GIS
