Safety Specialist is an intermediate-level safety engineering role supporting the design phase of a Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The position works closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure safety requirements are systematically identified, assessed, documented, and incorporated throughout project development.
The role is focused on system safety activities including hazard identification, risk assessment, hazard mitigation tracking, safety requirements development, and preparation of safety evidence for project governance reviews. Working within a transportation infrastructure environment, the incumbent will contribute to safety assurance activities that support project compliance, design integration, certification, and acceptance objectives.
The ideal candidate brings 5-7 years of experience in railway, metro, LRT, or transportation infrastructure projects with exposure to system safety, hazard management, and safety engineering principles. Experience coordinating cross-functional stakeholders and managing safety documentation within complex engineering projects is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Support hazard identification, risk assessment, and hazard management activities throughout the project design phase.
- Maintain and update the Project Hazard Log, ensuring hazards, risk controls, mitigation measures, and action status are accurately tracked.
- Participate in and facilitate hazard identification workshops and hazard review sessions with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Support the development, review, and maintenance of Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS) documentation.
- Conduct design reviews of engineering deliverables to verify implementation of safety requirements and mitigation measures.
- Coordinate with engineering disciplines to monitor, track, and close safety actions arising from risk assessments and safety reviews.
- Prepare technical safety reports, meeting minutes, risk documentation, and supporting project records.
- Support preparation of safety evidence and documentation required for Safety, Security and Regulatory Panel (SSRP) gate reviews.
- Assist with Certification and Acceptance (C&A) activities through the compilation and maintenance of required safety documentation.
- Participate in technical coordination meetings and contribute to the resolution of safety-related engineering issues.
- Degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Experience in railway, metro, LRT, or other transportation infrastructure projects.
- Experience in system safety, hazard management, or safety engineering.
- Familiarity with Hazard Logs, risk assessment methods, and safety workshops.
- Good understanding of railway safety principles and applicable industry standards.
- Strong communication, analytical, and teamwork skills.
The Safety Specialist will primarily support:
- Hazard Log management and updates.
- Hazard identification and hazard review workshops.
- Development and review of the Safety Requirements Specification (SRS).
- Preparation for SSRP gate reviews.
- Coordination of safety actions with the engineering disciplines.
