About the Role

The Geotechnical Field Technician is an entry-level to early-career field role based in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, supporting geotechnical investigations on transportation and infrastructure projects. This position operates within field teams responsible for collecting subsurface data and documenting site conditions to inform engineering design and construction decisions.

The role involves field investigation activities including coring operations, borehole observation, and construction site monitoring. Work is performed in active infrastructure environments such as roadways, requiring adherence to health and safety standards and coordination with multidisciplinary project teams. Responsibilities include supporting geotechnical data collection, field reporting, and collaboration with laboratory and engineering teams.

The ideal candidate is currently pursuing a Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology program, with foundational knowledge of soil mechanics and interest in geotechnical engineering, field operations, and construction inspection.

  • Conduct field investigation activities including asphalt and concrete coring operations in active construction environments.
  • Observe and document borehole logging data, including subsurface soil conditions and drilling progress.
  • Perform site inspection to assess subgrade conditions, drainage patterns, and general geotechnical characteristics.
  • Record accurate field data collection notes to support geotechnical analysis and factual reporting
  • Support laboratory coordination and assist in transferring field samples and documentation to testing teams.
  • Maintain detailed site documentation in compliance with project requirements and engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support project delivery within defined scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety compliance requirements while operating drilling equipment and working in roadway environments.

What do we need from you

Required

  • Ongoing Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology diploma/degree.
  • 0–3 years of experience in geotechnical fieldwork, construction inspection, or related site-based roles.
  • Ability to perform field investigation activities in outdoor and active construction environments.
  • Experience operating handheld drilling or coring equipment in a safe and controlled manner.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and within field teams on infrastructure projects.
  • Valid G Class Driver’s Licence with willingness to travel to project sites.

Assets

  • Understanding of geotechnical engineering principles including soil mechanics and soil classification.
  • Exposure to construction monitoring or infrastructure-related field projects.
  • Familiarity with borehole logging practices or geotechnical data recording methods.
  • Experience working in roadway or transportation project environments.
  • Knowledge of provincial safety standards for construction sites in Ontario.
