We are seeking an Environmental and Sustainability Engineer to join our site supervision consultancy team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The role will focus on reviewing, auditing, and monitoring contractors’ compliance with project environmental, sustainability, LEED, Mostadam, and local regulatory requirements during the construction stage.
The successful candidate will support the Construction Supervision Consultant team by reviewing contractor submissions, conducting site inspections and audits, verifying sustainability evidence, monitoring implementation of approved plans, and ensuring that contractors meet the required environmental and sustainability obligations. The role requires strong experience in construction supervision, green building certification requirements, environmental compliance, technical reporting, and coordination with contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and audit contractors’ environmental and sustainability submissions, including plans, procedures, method statements, reports, checklists, trackers, and supporting evidence.
- Review contractor compliance with LEED, Mostadam, project sustainability requirements, environmental requirements, and applicable Saudi Arabian regulations.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to verify the implementation of approved environmental and sustainability plans during construction.
- Monitor contractors’ compliance with requirements related to construction activity pollution prevention, waste management, material compliance, indoor air quality, erosion and sediment control, water management, energy efficiency, and environmental protection.
- Review and comment on contractor sustainability deliverables, including Sustainability Management Plans, Environmental Management Plans, Waste Management Plans, IAQ Management Plans, Construction Activity Pollution Prevention Plans, and related documentation.
- Review LEED and Mostadam documentation prepared by contractors and verify that the submitted evidence is complete, accurate, traceable, and aligned with project requirements.
- Monitor contractors’ sustainability and environmental trackers, including LEED trackers, Mostadam trackers, sustainability deliverables trackers, waste trackers, material trackers, and KPI reports.
- Identify non-compliances, gaps, risks, and missing evidence, and issue clear comments, observations, and recommendations for corrective action.
- Follow up with contractors to close sustainability and environmental comments, audit findings, NCRs, observations, and pending actions.
- Support the supervision team in reviewing material submittals and prequalification submissions from a sustainability and environmental compliance perspective.
- Verify that submitted materials, products, suppliers, and manufacturers comply with applicable LEED, Mostadam, environmental, recycled content, regional material, low-emitting material, and responsible sourcing requirements where applicable.
- Coordinate with contractors, project managers, engineers, document control teams, client representatives, and certification consultants to ensure timely review and closure of sustainability-related issues.
- Attend sustainability and environmental meetings with contractors and stakeholders, and support the preparation of meeting minutes, action logs, and progress updates.
- Prepare site inspection reports, audit reports, weekly progress summaries, compliance dashboards, and technical review comments.
- Monitor construction waste segregation, storage, disposal, recycling records, waste manifests, and diversion performance in line with project requirements.
- Monitor site environmental controls, including dust control, noise control, spill prevention, chemical storage, wastewater management, housekeeping, and protection of surrounding areas.
- Support the verification of indoor air quality management measures, material storage requirements, low-emitting materials, equipment protection, and pre-occupancy requirements where applicable.
- Ensure that contractor submissions and site practices are aligned with approved project documents, specifications, sustainability requirements, environmental requirements, and certification obligations.
- Provide technical advice to the supervision consultant team on sustainability and environmental compliance matters.
- Escalate major risks, repeated non-compliances, certification risks, and potential delays to the senior supervision team and client representatives.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Sustainability, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar environmental and sustainability role, preferably with a construction supervision consultant, project management consultant, or engineering consultant on building, infrastructure, mixed-use, or large-scale construction projects.
- Mandatory professional accreditation as LEED AP.
- Mandatory professional accreditation as Mostadam AP.
- Strong practical knowledge of LEED certification requirements, especially construction-stage documentation, site compliance, materials, waste, IAQ, construction pollution prevention, and contractor evidence requirements.
- Strong practical knowledge of Mostadam certification requirements, including construction-stage compliance, documentation, site implementation, and evidence verification.
- Experience reviewing contractor sustainability and environmental submissions, including plans, trackers, reports, material documents, audit evidence, and compliance records.
- Strong knowledge of Saudi Arabian environmental regulations, local authority requirements, and construction environmental compliance practices.
- Experience conducting site inspections, environmental audits, sustainability audits, and contractor performance monitoring.
- Good understanding of construction site activities and how sustainability and environmental requirements are implemented during construction.
- Knowledge of waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency, pollution prevention, material compliance, indoor air quality management, and environmental monitoring.
- Ability to identify compliance gaps, technical risks, missing documentation, and certification-related issues.
- Strong technical writing skills, including preparation of review comments, audit reports, inspection reports, meeting minutes, and compliance summaries.
- Strong communication and coordination skills with the ability to work effectively with contractors, consultants, client teams, and multidisciplinary supervision teams.
- Ability to manage multiple reviews, inspections, trackers, and follow-up actions simultaneously.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to verify evidence against project specifications, certification requirements, and approved plans.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience using document control platforms such as Aconex, Primavera Unifier, BIM 360, or similar systems is preferred.
- Experience in large-scale developments, infrastructure projects, mixed-use developments, hospitality, cultural, residential, or public realm projects is preferred.
- Preferred Additional Experience
- Experience working in Saudi Arabia or the GCC region.
- Experience with major developers, project management consultants, construction supervision consultants, or international engineering consultants.
- Familiarity with environmental reporting, sustainability KPIs, carbon reporting, LCA, EPDs, and green procurement requirements.
- Familiarity with commissioning, energy metering, BMS integration, low-emitting materials, and handover-stage sustainability documentation.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems is an advantage.
