Intermediate Electrical Designer – Roadway Lighting Design supports the planning, design, coordination, and delivery of transportation electrical infrastructure projects in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The role contributes to roadway lighting systems design, technical documentation, utility coordination, engineering analysis, and construction-phase support within multidisciplinary infrastructure project teams.
Responsibilities span design development, production of engineering drawings, photometric analysis, electrical calculations, technical reporting, tender documentation, commissioning activities, and site inspections. The position operates within applicable regulatory frameworks, including the Canadian Electrical Code and transportation authority requirements, while supporting project delivery from preliminary design through detailed design and construction.
The ideal candidate brings 3 to 5 years of progressive electrical design experience with direct exposure to roadway lighting projects, transportation infrastructure environments, utility coordination, and engineering design software used for electrical infrastructure development.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop roadway lighting and electrical infrastructure designs, including layouts, single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, grounding details, and engineering drawings.
- Prepare and review electrical calculations, including wire sizing, voltage drop analysis, and conduit capacity assessments.
- Perform photometric analysis and lighting design studies to support transportation infrastructure projects.
- Coordinate utility interfaces and stakeholder requirements related to electrical infrastructure design and construction activities.
- Prepare technical reports, specifications, tender documentation, and engineering deliverables in accordance with project requirements.
- Conduct design review activities to verify drawing accuracy, completeness, technical quality, and compliance with QA/QC procedures.
- Support multidisciplinary project coordination with civil engineering and other technical disciplines during project execution.
- Provide field inspection, commissioning support, and construction-phase technical assistance for installed electrical systems.
- Ensure design deliverables comply with applicable regulations, transportation standards, and sound engineering practices.
- Contribute to departmental standards development, template improvement initiatives, and continuous design process enhancement.
- Provide technical guidance and design support to junior engineering and design team members.
- Participate in client meetings, project discussions, and technical coordination activities to support project delivery objectives.
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or College Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology.
- 3 to 5 years of progressive electrical design experience.
- Minimum 3 years of direct roadway lighting design experience.
- Experience designing electrical systems for infrastructure and transportation projects.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
- Strong working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC).
- Experience preparing lighting layouts, wiring schematics, single-line diagrams, grounding details, and related engineering documentation.
- Experience performing wire sizing, voltage drop, conduit capacity, and related electrical design calculations.
- Experience using lighting design and photometric software, including AGi32 and AutoLux.
- Experience with O.Reg. 22/04 certification requirements.
- Experience coordinating with utility authorities and supporting utility-related project requirements.
- Ability to support site inspections, commissioning, and construction-phase services.

- Experience using SPIDAcalc or equivalent pole loading software.
- Experience supporting transportation agency or municipal infrastructure projects.
- Exposure to construction administration and contract implementation activities.
- Experience contributing to design standards, templates, and process improvement initiatives.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary infrastructure consulting environments.
