Diana RIVERO - Business Developer at Egis, Mexico

What action are you involved in?

Since my academic years and early career, I have been deeply committed to mentoring other women and demonstrating that leadership with confidence, clarity, and strength is not defined by gender. To this day, I remain committed to industry associations such as the League of Railway Women (LRW), which play a vital role in promoting gender equality and helping female professionals build strong, inclusive networks. strong, inclusive networks.

Why is this cause important to you and for business?

For me, increasing the number of women in leadership roles helps break stereotypes and opens doors for future generations of female engineers, consultants, and business developers. In a field where relationships, strategy, and long-term vision are crucial, gender balance isn’t just a social issue - it’s a competitive business advantage.

And I believe that my position as a business developer not only enhances resilience but also drives transparent discussions about gender balance in leadership, ensuring that diverse perspectives are embedded in decision-making processes in negotiations and projects we are actively working on.

Ayesha Nabeela - Principal Sustainability Specialist, Dubai

What action are you involved in?

I am the appointed chairwoman of our internal network "SheLeads", a committee representing over 2,000 women across Egis Middle East and South Asia. The committee is focused on driving inclusivity, mentorship and creating a trusted network for open dialogue.

Why is this cause important for business?

Gender equality is not just a moral imperative - it is a business advantage. Organisations that prioritise inclusion see tangible benefits: stronger financial performance, increased innovation and higher employee engagement. I am personally passionate about this issue because I believe that success should be defined by talent, not gender.

Why do you think gender equality is important?

True equality ensures that talent, innovation and leadership potential are recognised and nurtured, regardless of gender. The ripple effect of women's empowerment goes beyond the individual - it strengthens economies, drives organisational success and builds societies that are more inclusive, resilient and forward-looking. Gender equality drives national progress, reduces poverty, increases economic productivity and promotes sustainable development. A world that empowers women ultimately benefits everyone - creating a society that is fairer, more prosperous and better equipped for the future.

Andreea Barbalata - Civil Engineer, member of the Design Department, Romania

What action are you involved in?

I was mentoring a future engineer who was doing an internship in Egis in Romania during the summer programme. I was supervising her activity and guiding her in the design programmes such as Autocad, Midas and Geo5.

Why did you decide to be committed to this cause?

I work in a field where men are in the majority, and I think it is important for women to support each other in order to have equal responsibilities and opportunities.

Why is this cause important to you or for business?

I strongly believe that every person, regardless of gender, must be treated with respect, dignity and fairness, and I am proud to be at Egis in Romania, where the majority of the top management is feminine.

Fiona SLECHTEN - Urban Development Regional Leader and Urban Planner, Australia

What action are you involved in?

I have been a  Deputy Chair of the Urban Development Institute of Victoria (UDIA) Diversity and Engagement Committee for 9 years and have played a leading role in the delivery of the Institute's mentor programme, which I am deeply passionate about, for 6 years. I also lead the ANZ DEI Gender Pillar with Egis and am a member of the Minerva Women’s Property Group, a women’s networking group focused on the property industry. I have been shortlisted for the Women in Leadership Award with UDIA Victoria in 2023 and featured in the Humans of Property Publication which highlights the contributions of leaders in the industry in 2024.

Why did you decide to be committed to participate in these actions?

I joined the UDIA Women in Property Committee with a desire to meet other women in the industry and break what was otherwise a very male-dominated space where networking was somewhat restricted to a relying on a man willing to introduce you to someone. Then, we adjusted our mentoring programme to focus on both male and female young professionals. I personally saw great value in ensuring that these young professionals had equal opportunities to network early in their careers as well as support and guidance on issues such as work-life balance, managing up and down, negotiation and conflict management.

Chirlei Couto - Planning Engineer, Brazil

What action are you involved in?

I contributed to the Black Latin American and Caribbean Women's Day webinar, promoting reflections on inclusion and diversity in the corporate environment. I also gave lectures at my daughter's school.

Why did you decide to participate in this action?

I believe that every step towards equality makes a difference. Participating in the Black, Latin American and Caribbean Women's Day webinar was a way of reinforcing the importance of dialogue and representation.

Why is this cause important to you/for business?

Gender equality promotes a more balanced and innovative environment in which different perspectives can contribute to the sustainable growth of business, society and the corporate environment in which we operate.

Dinah Grapilon -  Head of HR, Philippines

What action are you involved in?

I actively promote gender equality by ensuring fair and inclusive recruitment practices, advocating for equal career opportunities and fostering a workplace and culture where all employees feel valued and empowered. I also provide guidance and advice to employees to help them overcome workplace challenges and develop their careers.

How long have you been committed to this cause?

My commitment to gender equality has been a fundamental part of my HR career. Over the years, I have worked to ensure that diversity and inclusion are embedded in our workplace culture and reflected in the way we support and develop our people.

Why is this cause important to you and for business?

Gender equality is crucial because it leads to stronger teams, better decision-making and a more engaged workforce. When employees - regardless of gender - are given equal opportunities to contribute and thrive, the organisation as a whole benefits. Personally, I believe that true success is achieved when workplaces empower people based on their talent and potential, not their gender, to determine opportunities for growth and leadership.

Mélanie Bonnissel - Group Talent Director, France

What action are you involved in and for how long?

I've been involved with 'Elles bougent', a French associationfor about ten years. I regularly take part in exchange days in secondary schools to share my experience with this young audience. I am particularly proud of having contributed to the development of the partnership with EllesBougent at Egis.

Why did you decide to participate in this action?

I've been a graduate for over 20 years, and unfortunately I've noticed that the representation of women in our technical professions has not progressed sufficiently. By sharing the realities of these professions and the wealth of careers they offer, I hope to encourage young girls to choose scientific and technical subjects.

Why is this cause important to you/ for business?

The diversity of our teams is our greatest asset. It stimulates innovation, improves efficiency and fosters creativity by bringing different perspectives. By creating an inclusive and equitable working environment where everyone can think differently, diversity contributes to individual and collective well-being, team cohesion and the company's overall performance.

Silmara De Assis - PMO's Director, Peru

How long have you been committed to gender equality?

I have a lifelong commitment to gender equality, both professionally and personally. Since the beginning of my career in the engineering and infrastructure sector, I have worked to create spaces and opportunities for women in what has historically been a male-dominated industry.

Why did you decide to be committed to this cause?

I have seen up close, in different parts of the world, the challenges women face in technical and leadership roles. Throughout my career, I have witnessed the talent, ability and resilience of many women who have had to work twice as hard to be recognised. I firmly believe that creating equal opportunities for all genders is not only a matter of social justice, but also a key factor in the effectiveness and growth of organisations.

Why is this cause important to you or the business?

Gender equality is not only a fundamental value, but also a competitive advantage for companies and nations. A fair and diverse environment helps to attract and retain talent, improve collaboration and build more sustainable projects.

Karolina Kurzak - Senior Associate at 10Design (an Egis Group company), Hong Kong

What action are you involved in and why did you decide to participate in this action?

A year ago, together with HR, we launched a mentoring programme for women at 10Design across Asia to accelerate the cause. Our Mentoring Programme is designed to empower younger women in their 20s and 30s to find their voice, support their needs and help them achieve their career aspirations. The programme offers one-to-one sessions, check-in meetings and panels with external guests, which are either exchange with female architects or short training sessions. Helping younger women is the least we can do as a practice to build them up, ensure they have the right role models to look up to and equip them with the right skills.

Why is this cause important for business?

Ultimately, architecture is about shaping the world we live in. If we exclude half the population from leadership and decision-making, we are limiting the potential for truly innovative and inclusive design solutions. Gender equality is not just a social issue; it’s a professional and creative necessity. I see the struggles of younger women, that I once faced myself. However, you can overcome these setbacks if you are surrounded by the right people and in the right environment. Supporting younger women and giving them the opportunity to develop their skills should be at the core of any organisation.

Léo Bricout, Ecology Project Manager, France

What action are you involved in?

I run a mixed community rugby club (called the Old Coyotes) which promotes the practice of rugby in all its forms in mixed and inclusive teams.

How long have you been committed to this cause?

My involvement began when I was in higher education between 2013 and 2019, with a fairly high level of awareness at university, certainly linked to the fact that my academic environment was very committed to the subject and included more women than men. It was during this time that I first became President of the University's mixed rugby team.

Why did you decide to be committed to this cause?

I believe it is only right that men and women should have equal access to sport and, more generally, to equal living conditions in all areas.  In my field, ecology, there is no great need to encourage women to become engineers, as they already make up the majority of graduates in the most common entry courses. But it's in the world of work that inequalities are felt.

Ivana Dmitrovic - Assistant Project Manager within the Urban Development, Australia

How long have you been committed to this cause?

I have been a passionate advocate for gender equality and women's rights for many years, especially during my 15-year journey of motherhood. Within Egis, I have been an active member of the Australia New-Zealand Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Network since its inception in 2023.

Why did you decide to participate in this action?

As a mother living in a patriarchal society and working in a male-dominated industry, I have felt incredibly frustrated and angry at the inequalities women face on a daily basis in their personal and professional lives. That's why I feel incredibly privileged to have a voice within Egis' DEI Network - a platform where I can share my thoughts, ideas and frustrations while contributing to meaningful change. Through this space, I am able to influence our policies and culture, encourage my colleagues to reflect on their own beliefs and actions regarding gender equality. On a personal level - as I raise three sons, I feel a strong responsibility to ensure they are aware of the societal structures and norms that impact women. My goal is to raise them to be active champions of gender equality, knowing that they are the next generation of men who can drive meaningful change.

Valérie Fabregue, Ethics & Compliance Representative for the Transportation Activity, France

What action are you involved in?

I'm part of the 'Elles bougent' association, which promotes science among young girls. I take part in one-off events such as the 'innovatech challenge', a day of teamwork where I coach a team of high school and university girls to work on an innovation and present it to a panel of experts.

How long have you been committed to this cause?

I've only been involved for 2 years, when I discovered this association promoted within Egis. With our busy schedules as managers, it's easy to get involved!

Why is this cause important to you/ for business?

Unfortunately, not enough young women are enrolled in engineering schools today to ensure that women are better represented in the sector. It's a shame, because there's nothing like a mix of men and women in a team to ensure a rich exchange of ideas! That's why I'm trying to do my bit to promote this wonderful profession among young women and girls.

Deirdre O’Hara – Chartered Engineer, Professional Geologist and Eur. Geologist, head of the geotechnology function, Ireland

What action are you involved in?

I am a member of the Irish Association of Women in Geosciences. I contribute to learning and act as a guest lecturer to engineering students at University College Cork and Galway University, talking to students about geotechnics and hoping to inspire a passion for the subject. I also coach under-10 girls in rugby for Sligo RFC, teaching them how to make their first tackle or score their first try.

Why do you think gender equality is important?

Gender equality is not something you just wake up one morning and decide to promote, it's an everyday thing. My mum claims that there has never been more gender equality than there is now. However, there is still gender inequality and we need to work with our male colleagues, friends and loved ones to increase women's participation in jobs, projects and roles that are currently perceived as male. We need to promote women and girls in engineering, science and politics to create a society where all voices are equally represented.

Gabriela Policarpo - Geotechnical Analyst at Egis, Brazil

What action are you involved in?

Since 2021, I have participated in a local social institution dedicated to the integration of women into society, promoting entrepreneurship and well-being. In 2024, I had the opportunity to participate as a speaker in a webinar at Egis in Brazil about the Black Latin American and Caribbean Women's Day, in which we explained the importance and meaning of this day, highlighting the story of Teresa de Benguela, a black woman who marked our history in Brazil as an example of leadership and intelligence.

Why did you decide to be committed to this cause?

I decided to commit to this cause because I believe in the importance of empowering women, especially black women, and the need to create opportunities for us to grow personally and professionally.

Why do you think gender equality is important/essential?

I believe that gender equality is essential because it ensures that we all have the same opportunities and rights. Throughout history, women have been portrayed as a secondary and fragile figure. However, we are skilled and capable of carrying out different activities.

Anjana Das – Landscape Architect at Egis Design Center (EDC), India

What action are you involved in gender equality and for how long?

I have been supporting this noble cause for over 12 years. I was involved in teaching for 5 years to local women. Then, I started supporting NGO "Save the children" for 3 years. Then I was engaged with "Prisa" during post graduation in School of Planning and Architecture at Bhopal for orphanage and autism centre especially collecting papers and notebooks and clothes for 2 years. Now I am continuing by women safety and metro city documentary reviewing process with an NGO called "Safetipin" for 2 years.

Why is this cause important to you/ for business?

Gender equality impacts business performance. A diverse team, including gender diversity, is more innovative and productive than homogeneous groups. It not only improves work efficiency but also increases the sense of safety in the workplace. Many studies show that many women are much more effective in decision making and much more influential in effective marketing. Gender equality in the workplace is not just a matter of fairness, it is a business success and a good reputation.

Deisy Martinez Flores - Quality, Environment and Safety Manager, Mexico

What actions are you involved in?

Being a pioneer in the management team of EGIS Infrastructure Mexico has given me the opportunity to show that gender does not define my intellectual capacities, nor does my status as a mother limit my professional performance, and I am committed to continuing to pave the way for others to develop in gender equality without being discriminated against.

Why did you decide to be committed to this cause?

Despite the great progress that has been made, unfortunately for us women it is not something that we can choose to get engage with or not, we can continue to accept being discriminated against or we can continue to move forward and continue to fight for our daughters, mothers, sisters and friends.

Why is this issue important to you or your company?

It is a matter of justice; all people should have the right to access the same opportunities according to our skills, experience, intellectual and professional development, creating a diversity that strengthens us. For the company, it is a matter of competitiveness, because it must assess our capabilities on the basis of our talents and not on the basis of our gender.

Stéphane DARMEDRU - Regional Human Resources Manager, France

What action are you involved in?

Within the HR department for the France region, I lead a number of initiatives related to diversity, gender equality, disability and quality of life at work (QWL).
I participated in the negotiation of the "Diversity - Quality of Life at Work" agreement, which was signed in August 2024 and includes a series of measures for professional equality between men and women that we will implement over the next 4 years.

Why did you decide to be committed to this cause?

I'm convinced that a team performs better when it is made up of members with complementary skills and different profiles. Diversity is therefore a real strength within a working group, as long as people are driven by shared values and goals, with clear operating rules that allow differences to create synergies rather than misunderstandings.

Why do you think gender equality is essential?

Gender diversity and professional equality are important so that everyone can develop according to their commitment, skills and results, regardless of their gender. This is a fundamental principle of law, but also of fairness and efficiency.
